Terms of Use

Version 1, 29 October 2026

These terms cover the online parts of Starboard!: online racing, the lobby and lobby chat, ratings and the leaderboard. Practice racing on your own device needs no account and is not covered by them. The app itself is licensed to you under Apple's Standard End User License Agreement. The service is provided by Phillip Reeder, Washington, United States ("we").

1. Who can play online

You must be at least 13 years old to race online or use chat. Online play uses your Game Center account; Game Center accounts that Apple marks as underage or as restricted from communication see no chat.

2. Accepting these terms

You accept these terms once, in the app, after signing in to Game Center and before the lobby or a race first appears. We record which version you accepted. If we change the terms in a way that matters, the app asks you to accept the new version before you race online again.

3. Zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive behaviour

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. Do not post anything that is harassing, hateful, threatening, sexual, violent, discriminatory or otherwise objectionable, and do not target other players. Every chat message passes a filter before anyone sees it, and links, email addresses and phone numbers are removed. Messages the filter blocks are shown only to you. Any player can block or report another, and a person reviews every report within 24 hours. Blocking hides chat in both directions.

4. Racing conduct

Race fairly. You must not cheat, use a modified or unofficial client, automate your inputs, exploit a defect to gain an advantage, or race in an unsporting way, including deliberate collisions, deliberately holding others up, or quitting to protect a rating. The racing rules themselves are judged by the game's umpire; penalties for conduct are decided by a person.

5. What moderation can do

Depending on what happened, we can hide or remove messages, mute your chat for 24 hours, 7 days or permanently, warn you, suspend you from online racing for 24 hours or 7 days, ban you from online racing permanently, and reset the rating of a proven cheater. Chat penalties never stop you racing, and racing penalties never stop you chatting. Practice racing is always available. Muted or suspended players are told so in the app, with the end time.

6. Race logs and your data

Every online race is recorded as a race log: the race seed, the inputs each boat applied, and the rule calls, incidents and protests. Logs are kept and used to settle results and disputes, to review reports, and to tune the game, as the privacy policy describes. The privacy policy also says what else we keep, for how long, and how to delete your online data from the app.

7. Availability and changes

Starboard! is a free service and we may change it, suspend it or shut it down, and may change these terms. Online racing needs a current version of the app; older versions are asked to update. We may cancel a race when the server fails or every player has left.

8. Disclaimer and liability

The service is provided as is, without warranty of any kind to the extent the law allows. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service. Nothing here limits rights that consumer law gives you and that cannot be excluded.

9. Law

These terms are governed by the law of the State of Washington, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, except where the law of your country of residence applies and cannot be excluded.
